Quarterly Police Report, Quarter 1, 2024

Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council will receive the quarterly report from the Police Chief on public safety activity in Northfield during the first quarter of 2024.

Summary Report:
For Quarter 1, 2024 which covers the time period of January 1, 2024 to March 31, 2024 the police department responded to 7689 Calls For Service (CFS). This was a 6% increase from last quarter Q4 2024, and a 2% increase from last year Q1 2023. The attachments included in this item show the calls for service in Group A crimes (more serious) and Group B crimes (less serious) as classified by the FBI NIBRS crime index.

National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). National Incident-Based Reporting System is an incident-based reporting system used by law enforcement agencies in the United States for collecting and reporting data on crimes. Local, state and federal agencies generate NIBRS data from their records management systems and report this information to the FBI.

The Quarterly Police Report is a presentation delivered by the Police Chief to the City Council that started in 2022. The intent of this report is to give a quarterly update to the City Council on public safety statistics and information. A brief presentation will be given along with a copy of the presentation in the council agenda materials.

The addition of the Data Coordinator position in the police department in 2022 has given the police department the operational capacity to research, track, and compile this data and make it available for presentation to the City Council and the public on a regular basis.
