Human Rights Commission Meeting Date: September 28, 2022
To: Human Rights Commission
From: Claudia Garcia, Staff Liaison
Title
Consideration of establishment of subcommittees.
Body
Action Requested:
Staff recommends a motion to establish committee membership and roles.
Summary Report:
The Human Rights Commission will discuss and assign members to subcommittees.
“X. Subcommittees may be formed to assist the Commission in its work. The Chair of the sub- committee shall be a member of the Commission and report to the Commission at each regular meeting.”
Staff is requesting the Human Rights Commission (HRC) create a committee from existing members for each celebration to work on planning, strategy, communications, public engagement and logistics to bring back to the board for action. We will discuss the specific roles and duties of committees at the meeting as well as potential time commitments. It is not expected these committees will meet monthly but rather as needed then to report back to the board for any formal decision-making on events.
The following are the current celebrations we have that we are requesting committee membership:
• Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
• Pride in the Park
• Hispanic Heritage Celebration
• Community Picnic
We should be cognizant of the overall goals and objectives of the Human Rights Commission (see work plan documents and attachments) and consider metrics to demonstrate how we measure success (attendance, interactions, surveys, etc.).
The establishment of committee should be completed with formal action by motion of the board. We will discuss process details at the meeting.
