Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council approves the attached redistricting process, principles and timeline.
Summary Report:
A broad overview of redistricting was presented to the Council at the January 11, 2022 worksession. Redistricting is the process of redrawing the boundaries of election districts after the completion of the decennial census. The purpose of redistricting is to ensure that the people of each district are equally represented. Following the census, the City must either confirm or redefine the ward boundaries.
In 2012, the City adopted a redistricting process, timeline & principles (Attachment 2). The Council discussed at the January 11 worksession adopting an updated redistricting process, timeline and principles document to guide the 2022 redistricting process. Attached is a draft of that document for Council consideration (Attachment 1). Also attached are the early redistricting calendar and the late redistricting calendar (Attachments 3 and 4). The dates on the 2022 Redistricting Process, Timeline and Principles may need to be amended depending upon legislative actions.
