Title
Consideration to Accept Donation for Basketball Court at Way Park.

Body
Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council approves the attached resolution accepting a donation from Friends of Way Park of $24,000 to build a new basketball court at Way Park.

Summary Report:
The Friends of Way Park were able to fundraise $24,000 for the basketball court improvement.

The existing basketball court will be removed and the new basketball court will be installed in approximately the same location (attachment 2). The existing court is 30 feet wide by 30 feet long with one hoop and the proposed court will be 46 feet wide by 62 feet long with two hoops.

The 2008 Park, Open Space and Trail System Plan calls out a 1/2 basketball court in the Way Park master plan (attachment 3). The area where the existing court is located is called out as an enhanced playground, handicap accessible in the 2008 Plan. According to the master plan, the existing court was to be relocated to the area where the Rotary Outdoor Musical Park (ROMP) was installed. Since ROMP was installed at the proposed 1/2 court location, staff is exploring if there is still room adjacent to ROMP play feature or to build in the existing basketball court location.

The Northfield Park and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) is recommending that the existing court be replaced. This new 2-hoop court would allow for a 3-point arc, pick-up basketball games and more people to shoot hoops at the same time. The existing court will be demolished as part of the new court construction. Way Park is classified as a neighborhood park. In the 2008 Plan the facility development guidelines states that neighborhood parks are an appropriate location for basketball courts.

The Friends of Way Park shared their project summary for the basketball court improvement (attachment 4).
