Title

Certificate of Appropriateness for a New Window in the Nutting Block “Annex”.

Body

Action Requested:

The Heritage Preservation Commission is asked to approve a new window in the “Annex” portion of the Nutting Block building at 222 Division Street South.

Summary Report:

The Blast Soft Serve is locating their business in the rear of the Nutting Block building known as the “Annex”.  Their business will be a part of the rear of the main building, facing west towards the Cannon River.  There is an underpass and then another small building with businesses in it.

In order to serve their customers, the applicant is asking for approval to create a new window identical to the existing window on that west-facing wall.  The new window will be where patrons place their order and the existing window will be where they pick up their soft serve.

The applicant is working with an architect and would hire a contractor to properly install the new window.  The brick arch to the top of the window and other details would be recreated.  The applicant noted (in consultation with their architect) that the brick from the portion of the wall they would remove, to create the window, would be reused to create the window arch and frame as long as the brick was stable.  If not, brick of the same style and color (matched as close as possible) would be used.

Alternative Options:

The HPC could deny the request for a new window.

Financial Impacts:

Not having a second window would decrease the businesses efficiency.

Tentative Timelines:

The applicant plans to open the business next year for the spring/summer season.
