Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council approves a motion for a bikeway on Prairie Street from Woodley Street to Jefferson Parkway in conjunction with the 2020 Seal Coat Project.

Summary Report:
In the adopted pedestrian, bike and trail system plan, Prairie Street is a proposed bikeway route that provides one of the north-south corridors on the east side of town. As part of this year's sealcoat project, the City has the opportunity to redo the pavement markings on the roadway. As with all seal coat projects, streets that have pavement markings are remarked with the project.

Prairie Street is 44 feet wide and the proposed bikeway will be on the west side of the roadway. Staff is proposing that the layout follow what was done on Heritage Drive with the 2020 Overlay Project. The layout concept is attached.

As part of expanding the City's pedestrian and bike infrastructure, we look for opportune times to implement projects. This appears to be a great opportunity and aligns with the Climate Action Plans goals.

Prairie Street is a collector street, and there is not a high demand for on-street parking. Parking on the west side would be removed for the bikeway; however, the east side parking will remain. There are only five driveways to residential home on the west side of Prairie Street resulting in very little impact to residential parking, and the east side will remain.

Staff is recommending approval of the bikeway on Prairie Street from Woodley Street to Jefferson Parkway.

Alternative Options:
Council could elect not to implement the bikeway.
