To: Human Rights Commissioners
From: Beth Kallestad, Program Coordinator
Title
Update on Municipal Identification Ordinance Amendment Request.
Body
Action Requested:
This is an informational item to update the Northfield Human Rights Commission on this item that was discussed at the May 9 and June 13 HRC meetings.
Summary Report:
At the June 13, 2019 HRC meeting there was discussion around modifying the name fields on the Municipal ID with regard to legal and preferred name. The way people are using the ID was discussed as it affects the need for legal name on the ID card. Finding out more about how the ID is being used and the entities that are accepting the ID was to be done and information brought back to HRC to help inform next steps.
Beth Kallestad, Program Coordinator, reached out to the Library and Police Departments to determine if they had information that could inform this topic. The Library/Link Services newsletter from June 2019 had a front page article about the ID and asked people to respond to the City to let us know how it is being used. As of July 1, 2019 there had been no responses. The Police Chief noted there have been a few instances of people displaying their Municipal ID cards. It was noted that the police do not usually request ID for the majority of their calls for service.
HRC members who were checking on this in the community will add their updates at the meeting.
