The Northfield City Council is asked to consider and pass the attached Resolution supporting City of Northfield participation in the Rice County Community and Justice Council.
Summary Report:
Since 2016, stakeholders in the Rice County Criminal Justice system have been working to create a coordinating council to improve processes in the local Criminal Justice system. The partners agreed that the mission of the Rice County Community and Justice Council (RCCJC) is to provide an ongoing forum for leaders from justice agencies, government agencies, and community service provider organizations involved with the justice system in Rice County, to discuss, study, evaluate, and prioritize public safety and justice issues and coordinate resources to address them in the most evidence-based, cost-effective, and equitable way possible.
In 2018, local Justice Partners created proposed by-laws for the RCCJC. According to the by-laws, the City of Northfield representation on the RCCJC would include the Mayor or Designee, Chief of Police or Designee, and the City Criminal Attorney. In September 2018, the Rice County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution creating the RCCJC.
Staff believe the RCCJC will be an important tool to improve service to the community as related to the local Criminal Justice System and recommend approval of the proposed resolution.
The Northfield City Council is asked to review the attached documents, Rice County Board of Commissioners Resolution, Proposed By-Laws, and RCCJC Council Information and consider approval of the Resolution.
