Title
Discussion of CLG grant opportunity

Body
SUMMARY AND ACTION REQUESTED:
The HPC is requested to hold a discussion on accessing available SHPO grant dollars.

BACKGROUND:
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has sent the following notice to CLG communities:

Because not all Certified Local Government (CLG) funds were awarded in April, additional money is available for 1) new projects and 2) scholarships to attend the 37th Annual Statewide Preservation Conference in Albert Lea this September 13-15, 2017.

Projects
For new projects, these pass-through dollars may be used for grant projects starting September 1, 2017 and ending on July 31, 2018. All CLGs are eligible to apply, including those that submitted an application on March 3, 2017. Applicants would need to provide matching funds for these projects. Match funds may be cash, in-kind, and/or donated services or materials contributed to the project. Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage (Legacy) grants may be used to match a CLG grant. In the past, numerous cities have made good use of small Legacy grants in matching their CLG grants, so please consider this as a source of match.

As in previous years, projects that will receive special priority are those that: reflect the goals and strategies in the 2012-2017 statewide preservation plan; result in local designations or National Register nominations; and involve properties associated with the history of heretofore under-documented groups or communities (ethnic or racial minorities for example, but also other groups defining themselves as communities). The CLG Grants Manual provides additional instructions regarding the full range of eligible activities and the selection criteria used in making awards. To apply for CLG projects use the Certified Local Government (CLG) Application in the grant portal.
