Body

Action Requested:

The Northfield City Council approves Resolution Proclaiming April 4, 2017 as Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service Day Recognition.

Summary Report:

Michael Maas, Active Aging Programs Administrator for Steele, Rice, Dodge, Mower and Fillmore Counties is requesting Council consideration of Council approval of the Resolution Proclaiming April 4, 2017 as Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service Day Recognition.

The nation’s mayors and county officials are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to address local challenges. By unleashing the power of citizens, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs have a positive and lasting impact - making our cities and counties better places to live. To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors and county officials will participate in the fifth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service on April 4, 2017.

This year, the event will highlight Habitat for Humanity of Rice County to recognize those local RSVP volunteers working in the area of affordable housing.  This special event recognizes the service and commitment of local volunteers in various local agencies and organizations with which we have partnerships through RSVP and the positive impact these volunteers have in the community of Northfield and Rice County.

Mayors Day of recognition this year is Tuesday, April 4th.  However, due to the number of communities participating we can hold the recognition event the day before or after as well.

Therefore, the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service event will take place 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017  at the offices of Habitat for Humanity, which are located at Cornerstone Community Church, 1313 Division Street, Northfield.

Mr. Maas expresses his appreciation for Council consideration of this Proclamation and attending the special event to recognize the contribution of these local volunteers helping to meet the need of affordable housing.
