Action Requested:

The Northfield Environmental Quality Commission requested staff to research the

City of Northfield receiving Bird City accreditation

Summary Report:

The Environmental Quality Commission received a presentation in August 2016 from Avery Hildebrand, Community Coordinator of Conversation Minnesota.

The presentation revolved around the benefits of the City of Northfield becoming a Bird City.

Key points of the presentation were:

Restoring , protecting and improving bird habitat

Reducing threats such as window collisions, free-roaming cats, toxins and harmful human activities often due to lack of understanding of bird’s needs.

Engaging people in learning about enjoying and helping birds thrive.

The Bird City Minnesota program allows for the City of Northfield to educate people about the benefits of birds through signage, group meetings, and initiatives to conserve and foster birds in the Northfield Area.  The Environmental Quality Commission has indicated that this program is a priority for the group and directed staff to investigate the application process.
