Action Requested:

Staff recommends a motion to approve the Arts and Culture Commission and city staff to develop and submit a grant application to the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for sidewalk poetry projects within the City of Northfield.

Summary Report:

The City Council is being asked to approve the submission of a grant application to the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC) for continuation of the sidewalk poetry project in Northfield.  The grant application deadline is October 1, 2016.  The ACC envisions requesting up to $10,000 from SEMAC for the project, which will require a match of a mandatory 20% $2,000 at least $1,000 of which must be in cash.  If granted, the money may be spent between February 1, 2017 and October 31, 2017.

To continue the sidewalk poetry project, the ACC is requesting Council approval to again apply to the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for the support for the 2017 project.

Financial Impacts:

Request for $10,000 2017 SEMAC grant, 20% ($2,000) match, with at least $1,000 in cash.  The cash portion of the match will be raised by local individuals and organizations.  Staff is very optimistic that this is a very achievable goal with individuals that are particularly supportive of this initiative.  The Library Fund will utilize operating funds to cover the cost in the event that donations that are not received.

Tentative Timelines:

The SEMAC grant application is due to SEMAC by October 1, 2016.
