The Northfield City Council is being asked to adopt the attached resolution approving the canvass of votes cast at the August 9, 2016 City Primary Election.

The Primary Election was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.  There were a total of 884 persons that voted via absentee ballot or in person on Election Day in Ward 2 and Ward 3.  There were 5,500 registered voters as of 7:00 am on Election Day.  An additional 45 persons registered on Election Day.  Voter turnout in Northfield was approximately 15% for these two wards.

The two candidates for each office who received the highest number of votes are the nominees for the office and their names are placed on the City General Election ballot.  A complete abstract of votes cast for Northfield races is attached.

The election judges work very hard to ensure that the elections are conducted in a fair and impartial way.  There were 73 judges spread across eight polling locations.  Staff deployed approximately 100 pieces of election related equipment which involves loading and unloading each piece four times over two days.   The time required to prepare for, hold an election and complete the post-election activities remains the same for staff and judges no matter what the voter turnout is or how many races are on the ballot.  A huge thank you to the judges and staff that assisted with the election!

Work for the General Election is already underway.  Election judge recruitment and voter registration outreach will be among the first activities in early September.  The number of election judges needed and equipment deployed for the General Election is anticipated to nearly double.
