Title
Consideration of Resolution Declaring Northfield an Age Friendly Community.

Body
Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council consider the attached Resolution Declaring Northfield an Age Friendly Community.

Summary Report:
The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities helps participating communities become great places for all ages by adopting such features as safe, walkable streets; better housing and transportation options; access to key services; and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities.

Attached is a presentation of the AARP Age Friendly Community focus group presented to the City Council on April 19, 2016. At that time, Brianna Wheeler and Chris Ellison presented the program to the City Council. They reviewed the areas to be addressed and noted that the group had chosen AARP Age Friendly Community as a catalyst. The group is asking for commitments from partners of issuing further action to receive this designation and commit to the program.

City Administrator Martig has held several meetings with focus group members to better understand the Age Friendly Community program and the role the City may play as it relates to this designation. To begin, the City would be supporting the application and to agree to participate in the process by attending planning meetings by the focus group. More details would be identified later. The Council would be provided future opportunity for input as to the role of the City and staff as this process moves forward.

The first step in this process is to approve a resolution by the City Council. The focus group is working on the AARP application that would include the resolution as a cover letter. A future Mayoral Proclamation likely will be requested but is not required for the application.
