Title

.5% Local Option Sales Tax

Body

Action Requested:

The Northfield Park and Recreation Advisory Board discusses the .5% Local Option Sales Tax.

Summary Report:

City Council approved the request to the State Legislature for a .5% general sales tax.  The State Legislature would need to approve this request and the local voters would also need to approved in the November general election for this to move forward.

The sales tax increase can only be used for regional projects that benefit not only local residents but also outside residents.  Some projects that are possible are Athletic Facilities (Spring Creek, Sechler and Babcock), River Corridor, Indoor facility (senior center, tennis courts, etc), Ice arena upgrades, etc.

Staff would like to setup a meeting with PRAB to facilitate brainstorming and prioritizing projects for these regional parks.  Meetings could be in the morning from approximately 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM.

Financial Impacts:

It is anticipated that the .5% sales tax increase could generate between $500,000 and $600,000 per year.
