Consider Resolution of Support for State Capital Bond Funding for the Might Ducks Grant R-22 Refrigerant System Replacement Grant program.

Body

Action Requested:

Council approves Resolution of Support for State Capital Bond Funding for the Might Ducks Grant R-22 Refrigerant System Replacement Grant program.

Summary Report:

The State of Minnesota has offered a program called the Mighty Ducks Grant that included funding for R-22 Refrigerant System Replacements for ice arenas in Minnesota.  R-22 has ceased production as directed at the federal level of government due to its hazardous impact to the environment.  The Governor of Minnesota has proposed to include funding for this Mighty Ducks Grant for the 2020 State Legislative Session.

The City of Northfield has an R-22 refrigerant system and is intending on replacing it in the near future. The system is still functional but prices on R-22 are anticipated to increase dramatically due to decreasing availability of the product as it is no longer in production.  The City anticipates applying for this state grant to offset local taxpayer costs for the replacement system.

The resolution is in development and will be provided as supplemental materials to the City Council.

This item was discussed at the February 11, 2020 worksession of the City Council.
