Park and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting Date: January 16, 2020
To: Park and Recreation Advisory Board
From: Tim Behrendt, Street and Park Manager
Title
Riverside Park Canoe/Kayak Takeout
Body
Action Requested:
The Northfield Park and Recreation Advisory Board approves the 7th Street turnaround and canoe/kayak takeout.
Summary Report:
The Park and Recreation Advisory Board budgeted $50,000 toward this project in June 2018 for construction in 2019. The canoe/kayak takeout was delayed in 2019 for added input from the Riverfront Enhancement Committee. The Riverfront Enhancement Committee looked at Babcock Park but due to cost, the Committee is now focused on planning concepts for the parks along the river.
However, to continue progress on river recreation Riverside Park is a great location for a takeout. With the 2020 Mill and Overlay project on Seventh Street, this is an ideal time to build the turnaround. Not only will the turnaround help with river access, it will also be beneficial for cars using Riverside Park.
The DNR will construct the canoe/kayak takeout while the City supplies the materials. The DNR considers this location safe and already designated as a river access.
Alternative Options:
Do not make improvements to Riverside Park.
Financial Impacts:
$50,000 budgeted from the Park Fund.
Tentative Timelines:
Summer of 2020.
