Update on KaBOOM Playground Grant

Body

Action Requested:

The Northfield Park and Recreation Advisory Board receives an update on the KaBOOM playground Grant.

Summary Report:

Northfield Promise was one of three selected nationwide to receive this grant.  The grant is for a playground to be built in the northern portion of Northfield near underserved residents that do not have a playground near them.

The City is looking for land to purchase along the Hwy 3 corridor north of Greenvale Ave to turn into a park and build this playground.  The size of the playground can be from 3,500 to 7,500 sq ft. with a dollar value of $300,000.  City staff determined that three sites could possibly work for the playground.  See attached maps for site locations.  City staff and Council met January 7 in a closed session for guidance on the next step in determining a site.  Council directed staff on the next steps.

The School District has shown interest in this if the City is unable to find a location.  The School District would use the grant money to build the playground at Greenvale Elementary.
