Title
Consider Resolution of Support of Application for the Northfield Rotary Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Project.
Body
Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council approves a Resolution supporting an application for the Northfield Rotary Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Project.
Summary Report:
The Northfield Rotary Club did a strategic planning process in 2017 and identified climate action as one of their top priorities. This led to the club forming a Rotary Climate Action Team (RCAT). Through RCAT, the Northfield Rotary Club is spearheading a project to be the catalyst and financial sponsor promoting the installation of “level 2” dual plug electric vehicle (EV) public use charging stations in the Northfield area.
With this grant opportunity available through Rotary, an EV charging station is in alignment with the initiatives in the Climate Priorities of the City’s Strategic Plan. Staff is recommending the City apply for the grant opportunity.
If awarded the grant, the vehicle charging station would be located in a public parking lot. Staff’s initial review found the parking area along Water Street appears to work best with the availability of an electric supply. Should the City be awarded the grant, staff will determine the exact location of the charging station.
The Environmental Quality Commission (EQC) met on March 14 and passed a motion recommending approval of this grant opportunity to the City Council.
Alternative Options:
The City could wait for implementation of the charging station at a later time; however, staff feels this is a good opportunity to pursue.
Financial Impacts:
Estimated Project Cost $11,072.
Rotary Grant $7,000
City Cost $4,072
City costs would be covered within the 2019 Streets Operation Budget.
Tentative Timelines:
Grant Application is due May 1, 2019.
