Action Requested:

The Northfield City Council will receive a presentation from the Earth Day Steering Committee.

 

Summary Report:

The City of Northfield’s Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of, and appreciation for, the Earth’s environment.  It is currently observed in more than 140 countries around the world.  Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water, and soil pollution.

 

The Environmental Quality Commission passed a motion of support for the Resolution at their March 19th Commission meeting.

 

Northfield will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 26, 2025.  The Environmental Quality Commission will have members at the annual Northfield Earth Day Celebration being held at Bridge Square in Northfield.

 

A resolution from the Council proclaiming April 26, 2025 as  Earth Day in Northfield will be a separate item on the meeting consent agenda.  A presentation will be sent via supplemental.

Financial Impacts:

The City sponsors the Earth Day Celebration. $500 has been budgeted in the Carbon Reduction Fund for the event.
