Action Requested:                     

The Northfield City Council considers a Resolution Approving Amendment to Section 4.05 Lunch and Rest Breaks for the Employee Handbook.

 

Summary Report:

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry posted a new law change.

 

Effective January 1, 2026, state law requires employees working six or more consecutive hours to be allowed at least 30 minutes to eat a meal.

 

Revised policy has been updated to more accurately reflect desired proper administration of policy and procedure under the State of Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry’s guidance.  Senior Attorney Christina Petsoulis has reviewed this policy change.

Tentative Timelines:                     

The City of Northfield Human Resources staff will inform each employee about this policy change after Council approval.

 

State law is effective January 1, 2026.
