Interconnection Update: Earlier plans in Docket 23-458 included about $1.2 million to upgrade one of Northfield's nine feeders as part of a six project package. In January 2026, Xcel Energy reported that rising equipment and transformer costs increased total project costs from about $9.7 million to over $23 million, exceeding the program budget. Despite this, the Department of Commerce found that the Northfield project remains cost effective and necessary to meet local demand, and it should move forward as planned to support additional distributed energy connections. The Commissioner's decision states: "Requires Xcel Energy to implement the previously approved upgrades at the following three locations: Chisago Substation, Northfield Substation and St. Cloud Substation. Xcel is approved for $2,115,000 to fund the specified upgrades."
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency - Local Planning Grant: The City of Northfield has received funding to study the feasibility of installing a geothermal heating and cooling system at the Northfield Community Resource Center (NCRC), a key hub for services like senior programs, early childhood education, and food access. This project will evaluate whether a ground-source heat pump system can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower long-term energy costs, and improve the building's sustainability and resilience.
