From: Risi Karim, Assistant City Administrator
Title
Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy.
Body
Action Requested:
The Council Employment Policy Committee review the draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy and provide feedback and direction to staff.
Summary Report:
Staff have developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy to provide employees with clear guidance on the appropriate and responsible use of generative AI tools in the workplace.
As the use of AI tools continues to grow, the policy is intended to establish basic expectations around privacy, data security, ethical use, accuracy, transparency, and employee accountability. The policy also clarifies that AI should supplement, rather than replace human judgment and that employees remain responsible for work produced with AI assistance.
The draft applies to City employees, contractors, and volunteers who use or contribute to the development or management of generative AI systems as part of their City duties. It also establishes roles for employees, supervisors, IT, and the City's designated compliance officer.
Financial Impacts:
None.
Tentative Timelines:
Staff will add the policy and motion to the October 6, 2026 City Council meeting consent agenda.
