Quarterly Police Report, Quarter 1, 2025
BODY
Action Requested:
The Northfield City Council will receive the quarterly report from the Police Chief on public safety activity in Northfield during the first quarter of 2025.
Summary Report:
For Quarter 1, 2025, which covers the time period of January 1, 2025 to March 31, 2025 the police department responded to 6569 Calls For Service (CFS). This was a 14.5% decrease from last year (Q1 2024), and a 7.3% increase from last quarter (Q4 2024). The attachments included in this item show the calls for service in Group A crimes (more serious) and Group B crimes (less serious) as classified by the FBI NIBRS crime index.
National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). National Incident-Based Reporting System is an incident-based reporting system used by law enforcement agencies in the United States for collecting and reporting data on crimes. Local, state and federal agencies generate NIBRS data from their records management systems and report this information to the FBI.
The intent of this report is to give a quarterly update to the City Council on public safety statistics and information as well as news of events and happenings involving your police department. A brief presentation will be given along with a copy of the presentation in the council agenda materials.
The addition of the Data Coordinator position in the police department in 2022 has given the police department the operational capacity to research, track, and compile this data and make it available for presentation to the City Council and the public on a regular basis. This information will assist the Police Department in meeting the goals of transparency in the work the officers do and the types of calls for service that occur in the city. This data compliments the data available on the Community Crime Map on the police webpage. <https://www.northfieldmn.gov/1432/Crime-Map>
The Police Chief strongly believes an informed community is a safer community and this information allows for community members to make informed decisions on their personal safety.
