Title

Ice Arena Public Art Project.

Body

Action Requested:

Discuss Ice Arena Public Art Project.

Summary Report:

The City is constructing A new ice arena. The picture below shows the proposed site plans.

The City will issue a request for qualifications (RFQ) for an artist or artist team to design and execute site-specific art installation/s, to be located on the exterior façade, grounds, and or interior lobby. The artist(s)/artist team will work with the project team to integrate the artwork into the overall building/site design. The desired mood for the artwork is “energetic, conveying movement, fun” and should incorporate light and color. We are considering a call for digital, projected artwork, mosaic mural, or a series of small-scale lighted sculpture. Staff are considering limiting the geographic eligibility to make the process easier, and engage more Minnesota artists since we had so few apply for the last RFQ.

City staff working on the RFQ are Natalie Draper with the help of Jayson Dwelle, facilities manager, and Dave Bennett, public works director. The public art component will have approximately $180,000 budget, equivalent to 1% of construction costs.
